What is the Pantone Color of the Year?

Pantone is the most universal color matching system worldwide. Established in 1963 as service to the printing industry, Pantone is now widely accepted beyond ink and is used to match colors across all mediums. Today, the Pantone Formula Guides and Solid Chips categorize nearly 1900 different shades of color from the mundane to the extravagant.

The Pantone Color of 2022 is Very Peri.
Through their Pantone Color Institute, the organization works with industry professionals to watch trends across fashion, graphic design, social media, and interior design and announce a fresh and often bold color of year. The hue selected has become increasingly influential in the vast world of design and brand marketing.
Pantone describes Very Peri as “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone… Blending the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red, this happiest and warmest of all the blue hues introduces an empowering mix of newness.”
What does a space with such a bold color even look like?
As guidance to interior design, Pantone suggests “Very Peri is suited to an array of different materials, textures and finishes, providing a pop of color, whether introduced through a painted wall, accent furniture or home décor, or acting as an intriguing and eye-catching accent in a pattern.”

With such a bright accent color, experts at Kieding bring in grey tones to soften it, white to neutralize and black for balance. As shown in this rendering of a modern break room, a bold color like Very Peri does not presuppose a bold space. The design gives the space personality without being overbearing.

Is it typical to see the color of the year requested by tenants?

Generally, no. However, we do see bright colors requested and we know how to work with a broad range of those requirements.

The color of the year often makes its way through fashion and print very quickly but branding and interiors are subject to the personality of the tenant and the timeframe for which they update their space.

Some creative brands renew their look every year according to the new color, but most businesses cannot handle that much change. Smaller upstart companies which are selecting color for brand identities for the first time will likely adapt a color of the year. Restaurant and Medical Spas may perform a periodic refresh of their brand identity. Legal and Financial services firms will likely hold onto colors for extended periods of time. Companies that have become known by their color, such as Big Blue IBM, may never change.

However, the return to office push may accelerate change as many company executives are taking the opportunity to reconsider their facilities and taking steps make the office more welcoming to their employees and attract talent. This may also include relocation into different facilities that are right sized for hybrid working arrangements.

How does all this affect my building?

With new assets under construction and spaces leasing on spec, older buildings will need to refresh their offering to compete for tenants. Single occupant buildings may soon find themselves with space given up by the principal tenant for the first time. Finally, the mixture of brand identities within a given multitenant building will increase. Building owners will need to consider how each tenant view communal areas such as lobby, conference facilities, and other amenities as an extension of their branding while maintaining a building standard that is cohesive, cost effective, and resilient.
